Messing around with degrees

Can this Labour Government find nothing better to do with its time?

Once again we face the prospect of our University system being disrupted so that it can accomodate students who want to drop in and out of university throughout their lives. (see http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2008/nov/13/education-universities-review-degrees-higher)

Further dilution of academic standards at HE level?

So what has happened to much vaunted 50% in HE proposed by Labour back in 2000?

A report card!  Do me a favour, part time study yes, more flexibilty certainly, more support for students agreed, but this is not the route to go down.

It is hard enough to study for a degree part time let alone over a life time – what happens to modules taken twenty years ago in subjects linke sciences or computing?  How relevant will they be after this sort of time span?

I am sorry but this simply smacks of political interference and another agenda for the dumbing down of degrees so everyone can have one, thereby making the actual qualification meaningless in terms of personal, academic and employment currency.

Tell you what how about Gordon and his chums get back to the job of sorting out the mess THEY got us into, leave the education system alone, you don’t understand it, and ‘what ain’t broke don’t need fixing!’
